Celebrating 10 Years of SONYA

This is the start of our 10th year — we’ve reached the double digits of longevity! It’s a fitting milestone for looking backwards and forwards, to remember our roots and to reach for our future. Therefore, you’ll be seeing us use words like new, improved, renew, remember, and retro quite a bit in 2009, beginning with this re-NEWed and digitized SONYA News. It is our renewed commitment to better communicate with our many members and fans.

Our first community news outreach was our newspaper, SONYA News, which was published from Spring 2002 thru Spring 2005, edited by SONYA co-founder and fine artist, GG Stankiewicz, and designed by graphic designer and fine artist, Nan Carey. Reacting to the high cost of ads in local papers and magazines, GG had said, “Let’s just make our own newspaper that will promote SONYA artists, events and the role visual arts and artists in our community!” It was published and distributed just in time for our then semi-annual SONYA Studio Stroll, and its popularity surprised even us.

There were also several attempts to keep a newsletter going thru email, but until this past year, mailing to large groups was rather difficult. Now with the support of Patron Mail, we are finally able to communicate with all of you in style and ease.

With each issue we will highlight the SONYA art news and happenings of the months to come. Please enjoy and give us your feedback! Tell us what you want to hear more about and less about!

We sincerely thank you for all your support in so many ways these past 10 years and look forward to many more years of bringing you great art by SONYA’s.

This organization has received funding from the 2010 JPMorgan Chase Regrant Program, administered by the Brooklyn Arts Council.
